Fall 2023 Trends

A MOD WORLD

The mid-century space-age aesthetic is inspiring filmmakers (see: Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City) and fashion designers alike. Paco Rabanne revisited its iconic 1960s Unwearable Collection, Simone Rocha experimented with a modern medieval-chain-mail fantasy and Courrèges played with minis and full-moon-shaped cut-outs.

MAD FOR PLAID

A tidy check is always a smart move for fall, whether you’re heading to class or not. This season, Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood, Christian Dior, Thom Browne and king of punk Marc Jacobs all put a fashionably edgy spin on the classic.

SLOUCH POTATO

Loose-fitting trousers are a welcome wardrobe addition for anyone who’s still wary of the return of hard pants. Far from sloppy, this season’s slouchy slacks are giving collegiate skater boy when paired with tailored separates à la Gucci, Bottega Veneta and Ralph Lauren.

ON FIRE

Designers were seeing red this season, taking the bold hue beyond the classic red dress and putting it on fresh silhouettes, like suiting at Ferragamo, silky floor-length slip-dresses at Ann Demeulemeester and an equestrian take at Hermès.

BOLD SHOULDER

Nineteen-eighties opulence reared its head on the runway via the era-defining shoulder pad, which is back in an outrageously big way. These exaggerated épaules were spotted at Balenciaga, Proenza Schouler and Saint Laurent, where creative director Anthony Vaccarello pushed them to a new extreme..

HITS THE SPOT

Blame Yayoi Kusama—polka dots are the whimsical print of the season. At Chanel, the house’s signature white camellia bloom was strategically dotted on black tweed blazers, while Marni and Valentino also explored the classic black-and-white combo.
